In colonial houses, transitions between rooms were marked not by doors but by elegant arches that allowed more light and ventilation inside. This Moorish-inspired arch, most likely placed between the main living room and the dining room, has ornate horseshoe arches centring an ogee arch; above is a delicate, back to back fretwork carving of scrolling and interlacing foliage ubiquitous in arabesque design, supported by Corinthian capitals on deeply carved spiral columns and appliquéd rectangular pedestals. The Moors were nomadic Islamic people from North Africa dominant in Spain and Portugal from 711 until 1492. Complete and in very good condition.

Provenance:

Morato family estate, Caluag, Tayabas
