Pair of Angels

A pair of angels

Possibly from a Manila

atelier

Late 19th century

Medium hardwood,

original polychromy chipped in parts,

arms and tin wings pegged in

60 x 33 x 14 cm (23 1/2 x 13 x 5 1/2 in) /

56 x 40 x 13 cm (22 x 15 3/4 x 5 in)

A handsome pair of winged angels, probably from a retablo or from a large carozza (wheeled bier for santos). No significant loss except for chipped polychromy and rust on the tin wings. The pair stand on clouds in the “contra-posto” stance, with one leg forward. Drapery covers the private parts, in keeping with the dogma that angels were sexless beings. The position of the arms indicates that they may have held altar furnishings or if on the carroza, candle stands with glass globes. The pair is carved in the Neo Classical style fashionable in the late 19th century. Glass orbs fill the sockets.

Estimate: PHP 100,000 - 120,000
