Ealing rail crash
On Wednesday 19 December 1973, the 17.18 Paddington to Oxford was derailed between Ealing Broadway and West Ealing resulting in 10 dead and 94 injured. The cause turned out to be an insecure door of a battery box on the locomotive - D1007 Western Talisman - which broke away, hitting rodding, the points moving under the train as it passed over them.
This was the scene on the following morning, with class 47 1644 attending with the breakdown crane from Old Oak Common. D1007 was withdrawn following the accident and scrapped at Swindon in February 1975.
