The Church with the dusty pews!

Tie a yellow ribbon!

For Happy Bench Monday today, I uploaded a shot of the inside of a dusty and abandoned church. Just to make the presentation, here is Christ Church, Sofala in all its external, corrugated iron abandonment.

We will return to Sofala in due course and it also features in my 2018 trip album. An old gold mining town, much of it is right out of the second half of the 19th Century, and often showing its age. Christ Church has been abandoned for a while and it’s rather chewed sign goes well with the surrounding graveyard which fits the town’s ambience exactly, with gravestones and grave fences collapsed or fallen, weed grown and occupants long forgotten.

Sofala is north of Bathurst in New South Wales and a round trip to equally historic Hill End, Sofala and back via Portland and Lithgow makes for a fascinating day delving into the history of our nation. And if you love photography, fill your card because the shots of heritage buildings, murals and vistas of the western side of the Blue Mountains are outstanding. You probably need a few days to do the area justice, more if you add in Jenolan Caves.
