Family 6 – Rameen and Safi, Afghanistan
Very chatty man called Rameen from Afghanistan, traveling with his younger brother Safi (not their real names). They arrived at 10pm the night before. ‘I want to enjoy my life’ he told us. It took them 13/14 days to travel from Afghanistan. His said he had two children (two girls, 1 and 4 years old) back in Afghanistan. ‘I want my family to come here. As you know, in Afghanistan there is the Taliban, there is Isis. It is a bad life’ (note: CAFOD uses the term ‘armed groups’ rather than Daesh or ISIS).
Various people told us that they or their children had some kind of complaint or illness and wanted medical attention. For example, this Afghan man told us that he had a bad leg and saw a doctor in Athens but he was just given a bandage and ibuprofen. There was no 24 hour medical care available at the petrol station, unlike at the main border camp.
More than 930,000 refugees arrived in Greece in the past 12 months. Last year several thousand people were crossing the border at Idomeni every day but now there are tight restrictions. Caritas is providing food and WASH.
