Yellowhead (Mohua)
Not the best photo but given how rare and hard to find these birds are in the wild I decided to post it. Like a lot of native birds here in New Zealand, the Yellowhead (Mohua) is another victim of introduced preditors, especially Stoats. At one stage they were widespread across the country but now they are only found in a few places in Fiordland and the Catlins aswell as a few off shore islands in Southern New Zealand. Only a few thousand remain. Whilst walking in the Catlins forest we came across a noisy flock of Yellowhead's high up in the canopy, but for a brief moment, a few of them came down to take a closer look. Luckily they stuck around just long enough for me to get a few pics.
