Her Name Is Style! She's A Sandhill Crane Chick! =o)
Style is the second hatchling, and she takes after mama Cherry. She was about 17 days old in this shot. I think she is a girl because she has Cherry’s nostrils and slight under-bite. I have no scientific reason to believe the beak shape is maternal or paternal in Sandhill Cranes as a species, but it appears to be with this pair. The way the chicks stick with one parent or the other more seems to be same gender based because they look so much like the parent they follow. Not just their beaks, but the shape of their knees is something else I’ve noticed which is similar to their same gender parent. The boys stick with and learn from dad and the girls from mom. As I type that “out loud”, I realize it seems like common sense for their procreation.
As you know by many posts, Classic has huge open nostrils, as do his boys. In the words of the Big Bad Wolf, “All the better to smell you with my dear.” ;o) Or maybe that was a paraphrase… =o)
The family hung out with out with their other parents/grandparents most of the day today. They even had a bath in the lake. The chicks were splishin’ and a splashin’ and running around like kids do. Classic stayed in the water longer than everyone else, no doubt enjoying the weightlessness on his injured foot. When he got out of the water he preened his feathers and seemed pretty sturdy in doing so. He is walking better and standing taller. He is not hunkering over, and flapping his wings to reduce the weight. The swelling is a bit less, but it was last week, and then it got worse.
Their other mother/grandmother and I are trying to be optimistic, but we know he may need to go to rehab. She shared the bath story today, and I am sharing the highlights with you. I’ve seen it other times when she wasn’t around and had no idea where “her cranes” were at times. We are like two halves of the whole of their lives, and it’s a gift.
