Bad idea #1. I used a 17 tooth cog from an old cassette. I didn't have enough spacers so I used a cog, two spacers, my 17 tooth, made the rest up with spacers. The problem with two spacers between cogs is the chain will jam between them. Even though the chainline was perfectly straight and the tension was tight, the chain tried to shift at 25 mph. Got stuck between the two cogs and locked the rear wheel up. I ordered the proper 17 tooth, non shifting cog.
