Cockspur Lighthouse
Built in 1854, Cockspur Lighthouse is located on an islet off Cockspur Island at the South Channel of the Savannah River by Lazaretto Creek. It was heavily damaged by a storm in 1881 and only stayed lit until 1909, due to infrequent use of the south channel.
It is also one of the five surviving historic lighthouses in Georgia and was relit in March 2007. Considered part of Fort Pulaski National Monument, it is open to the public, but no official tours are made. As a result of high tide flooding, crossing by land to the lighthouse is not advisable, so access is most often by small boat or kayak.
So, I was thrilled when the dolphin tour we'd booked took us past this beautiful lighthouse, giving us a wonderful view of it. A sight which I never dreamed would be possible.
