Piercing Faith

A young Hindu having his mouth pierced at Thaipusam celebrations. Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, Singapore. Onlookers encourage the devotees by screaming chants that sounded like 'Arora, Arora'. The piercings are done is small groups after preparing an array of offerings laid out on banana leaf.

I was surprised to find that the event lasts practically the whole weekend with most of the activity happening between 12AM and 6AM on Sunday. The temple grounds were a fascinating display of people's devotion to their faith.

Notes: Black and white conversion (Lightroom Black and White Preset - Look 5). Painted in some highlight correction near the forehead piercing to recover detail.
