Thuparamaya
My take on a classic landmark of Sri Lanka. This is Thuparamaya; the oldest stupa in existence on the Island. It was originally built by King Devanampiyathissa in the year 3BC shortly after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Over the centuries its been subjected to destruction and vandalism at the hands of numerous invaders and looters and has been restored and developed over time by a number of Kings including Sena II, Udaya II, Parakkramabahu I and Agbo II. The current shape and form of the stupa was what was built in 1862AD. An interesting fact was that earth from the Basawakkulama tank was used in the brickmaking that went into the original structure.
