The EMD F-Class diesel-powered streamlined train is depicted passing through Californian orange groves. The simultaneous introduction of diesel traction and the introduction of air-conditioned coaches transformed long-distance rail travel at the end of the 1930s. After World War 2, the leading US railroads invested heavily in new equipment. But the increasingly popularity of domestic air travel, more widespread car ownership and finally the inauguration of the nationwide interstate road network proved siphoned passenger business away from the railroads from the 1950s. What remains of the US long-distance passenger network is in the hands of the federally-funded Amtrak organisation.
