The Mods’ mode of transport

A customised Lambretta scooter is displayed in the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery as a reminder of the 1960s Mods vs. Rockers battles that took place when the opposing youth subculture groups would gather in Brighton on Bank (public) Holidays.

The rocker subculture was centred on motorcycling, and rockers dressed in the style of Marlon Brando in ‘The Wild One’ (1953). The overtly masculine Rockers viewed the Mods as effete, with the latter’s focus on fashion and music, as well as their favoured scooters, as worthy of supreme contempt. Punch-ups duly ensued, causing much alarm in the mid-1960s’ mass media.
