Composition (1929)
By the Dutch artist, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931). He collaborated with his countryman Piet Mondrian to set up the De Stijl movement in 1917. This advocated a pure geometric and reductive style in painting, architecture and design. However, whereas van Doesburg incorporated diagonal lines in his non-representational paintings, as seen here, Mondrian insisted on a strict adherence to vertical and horizontal lines only.
