Here comes the Flying Yankee
Advance publicity for the Flying Yankee streamliner, published by the Boston & Maine Railroad. The service was introduced in 1935, linking the 254 miles between Boston North station and Bangor, Maine in a journey time of 5.5-6 hours. The train comprised a single ‘shovel nose’ Winton-powered locomotive hauling three Budd stainless steel coaches. The design was similar to the Burlington Road’s ‘Pioneer Zephyr’ and was the third diesel streamlined train to the run in the United States.
After withdrawal in 1957, the Flying Yankee was set aside for preservation and currently awaits restoration on the Conway Scenic Railroad, New Hampshire.
