Baker Street blue note

Crossing at the busy junction with Marylebone Road is EnsignBus Volvo Olympian ex-Metroline on Jubilee/Met Line bustitution work. It is pursued by a brace of Transdev Scania's on the 13, the foremost one being a "Polish Dustbin" and followed in turn by a plug-ugly East Lancs example.

Architectural notes: the Portland stone building at the right is the Chiltern Court mansion block, developed by the Metropolitan Railway and originally intended as a luxury hotel.

The distant clock tower is the former HQ of Abbey National (originally set up as the Abbey Road Building Society). This is the site of Sherlock Holmes' address of 221b Baker Street. Abbey National quit the building after being taken over by Santander. A popular tale has it that Abbey National retained a member of staff with the exclusive job of replying to all correspondence addressed to Sherlock Holmes.

And as part of the mansion block at the far left is a Lloyd's Bank. Its safe boxes were raided in September 1971 by robbers who tunnelled in from an adjacent shop. The robbery and its aftermath fuelled much speculation about the stash and the delicate secrets that the robbers managed to obtain. This formed the plot of the 2008 film, The Bank Job, starring Jason Statham. In an example of art following life, the very same location featured in the movie.
