If you want a 1/8 power setting for the Vivitar 285HV, and you don't mind loosing the auto modes, you can do the following. (and if you wanted you can reverse the mod an put it back the way it was)

 

Unsolder the red and black wires indicated by the two asteriks above. Replace with a 43k ohm resistor. This will make all the auto (colored) positions a 1/8 power step.

 

After testing two units I think a 47k ohm resistor would be a better choice rather than the 43k ohm (and easier to find).

 

I measured a greater than two stop difference between the 1/4 and the 1/16 power steps. The 43k resistor gave me a one stop difference more than the 1/16 power. But the jump between 1/4 and 1/8 was 1 2/10 difference. Using a 47k resistor might split the 2/10 stop difference. This is not a big deal though. Either would work fine.
