_J5A8200 Little stint (Calidris minuta)

Side, Turkey.

Early morning visit to the Manavgat river site.

This a totally flat area which, driving along the track, starts with fields then degenerates into what looks like a dumping ground for builders waste. There are numerous sand excavations leaving low areas some 6 ft deep. The rubble seems to be going into these holes. Towards the river mouth one such excavation still had water in it (15x30 yards) but the rest were dry. There were supposed to be lots of drainage ditches housing herons and egrets etc but most of these seem to have gone to the extent I didn't see a single heron of any description during my 3 visits.

On the drive down to the wet area I had 3 bee-eaters and 2 (male) red-footed falcons but it was too dark to photograph them. The little wet area housed approx 15 little stints plus common, wood and curlew sandpiper and a spur-winged plover
