L-39 Albatross
An L-39 Albatross performs a low flyby during a demonstration at Republic Airport on Memorial Day 2008. The Albatross is a high-performance jet trainer aircraft developed in Czechoslovakia. It has a range of almost 1,000 miles when it is equipped with external fuel tanks. The aircraft went into service in 1972 and is still in service with as many as 16 nations to this day.
According to the Museum brochure, "The American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport sits on some of the most historic ground in our nation's aviation history...where thousands of P-47 fighters were built to combat the Axis. Today the museum houses a squadron of operational "warbirds", including the legendary P-47, and uses the very runways, hangars, and control tower that once dispatched aircraft to war. For a new generation fo young Americans, this instituion allows our heritage to come alive with flying aircraft whenever weather and maintenace permit."
