We followed the advice of the Kenya Wildlife Service and hired an armed guide to accompany us. George only cocked his rifle once, when we headed through a patch of scrubby trees.

 

There have been attacks on hikers in the hills - by man and buffalo alike - but we encountered several other groups that hadn't bothered with a ranger, including a band of German doctors and an enthusiastic Kenyan hiking group.
