We’ve been tagged by Inda requesting a picture and 10 Facts. This is Nina, the youngest of our 3 much loved Standard Poodles (Chase, Piper and Nina). I was fortunate to grow up in a competitive horse and dog family that bred German Shepherds and later Rottweilers, but since the ripe old age of 6 I knew in my heart that Standard Poodles were the breed for me. It wasn't until I was married that dream became a reality. We’ve had Standard Poodles since 1988. Nina and I found each other in the most unexpected place – on Ravelry (a community site, organization tool and yarn and pattern database for knitters and crocheters). She was born in Portland Oregon from the first litter bred by online knitting friends.
To know her is to love her:
1. Her dad is Ch Avion Turbulence II, her momma is Ch Safari’s Bella Canzone Di Notte and she is officially Ch Canzone Bella Nina of Gardenpath TD. She finished her show Championship as a 9 month old puppy and has earned her Tracking Dog title. She’ll be 2 yrs. old next week. She’s training in obedience, tracking, rally and we’ve done a little bit of retrieving with ducks. If spring ever arrives we’re going to a herding clinic and see what she thinks about sheep since she’s always trying to herd our other poodles. She’d make an awesome agility dog but 3 reconstructive surgeries to the bottom of my foot means that my poodles don’t play that game seriously anymore.
2. Nina’s always in a joyful mood. She’s the happiest soul I’ve ever met.
3. Given (or seizing) the opportunity she’ll try to stick her tongue in your ear. She doesn’t bother with dog ears, just people. My family would have the cleanest ears in the country if Nina were given her way…
4. She’s a fanatical retriever and most always carries something in her mouth. Balls are her favourite toy and reward. There isn’t anything she wouldn’t do to earn her ball. Chase likes to bring things to greet people at the front door - a toy, a rag, a bone. If she doesn’t have something in her mouth to greet people coming in she’ll snatch whatever he has to offer it up.
5. She and her buddies Chase and Piper run hard at my parent’s nearby farm a few times a day. We keep about 6 acres mowed for the dogs and I to play and train on. We also go on a lot of walks in the city and enjoy hiking on trails near the river.
6. Tracking is her thing. When she sees her long line, harness or the tracking gear she gets excited. She loves it. She just gets it, that I want her to stick to following the scent of one person and work out where they went and find what they dropped.
7. Nina’s the smallest dog I’ve ever owned. She’s 23-1/4” and 44.5 pounds.
8. She’s sleeps on our bed, usually with her head on me. Another favourite place is the truck. She loves to go places. At the sound of car keys she’s up and ready to roll.
9. Nina grows hair like crazy. We’ve had a lot of poodles over the years, but her coat grows faster than any other poodle we’ve ever had. Thankfully it's not prone to matting. She usually gets a shave once a week. Genetically she’s black and carries a recessive brown gene. I haven’t tested her for a fading gene, but looks like she's got it – she’s a very dark blue now and just starting to fade. When she’s beside our inky black poodles she’s definitely got a slated tone to her coat. It makes it much easier to take pictures of her than our blacks.
10. She’s an all-weather girl. Beautiful or miserable weather doesn’t make a difference, she likes to be out in it all of it. Hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet, thunder, wind... doesn’t matter. Maybe because of that extra dose of “joy” she has deep in her heart.
