Let's go! | Martinique
With every eye-catching scene on Martinique I am reminded of the devastation brought to the island when the volcano Mount Pelée erupted in 1902 killing over 30,000 people. On May 8th of that year a massive blast sent a pyroclastic flow ( a superheated cloud of ash, gas, and rock ) down the mountain at high speed. The capital city of Saint-Pierre was destroyed, with nearly all of its inhabitants killed instantly. It was the deadliest volcanic eruption on Earth in the twentieth century. Today this lush and magnificent Caribbean paradise astonishes visitors with its beautiful landscapes and beaches of every hue -- some pink, some white, some tan, and some black depending on their location near the volcano and the effects of heavy lava flows in 1902.
