Any trip to Venice should be planned wisely and well. Go at the wrong time and the Adriatic might be overrunning St. Mark's Square or summer heat might be turning the canals putrid. Catch it just right and you'll be very happy. I have never stayed in Venice when visiting, preferring to stay in an outlying area with frequent and fast bus service into the city. Favorite place to stay: the Villa Ducale in Dolo.
