Setting out on the walk
Mom and Dad go for a one-hour walk every morning, taking exactly the same route every time. "Sometimes we change it, maybe every two years", Dad said. They leave about 6:30, right after Dad wakes Mom up, which is usually around sunrise, wintertimes before, summertimes just after. (Dad's already been up for 2.5 hours at this point, lifted weights, done pushups and situps, rode the exercise bike, read Newsday, eaten his rabbit mix with skim milk "(or water, if Brynn has drunk all the milk the night before)
This is when they talk about things - their families, their kids, and secrets that I will never know about.
But I got to join them today, since I woke up at 6, partially because I;m still on Berlin time, but mostly because my stomach was protesting from all the calamari, mussels, chicken Marsala, spaghetti, garlic knots, canolis, chocolate cake, cheesecake, tartufo, and Chianti that I put into it, prodded on by Grandma Di Vito, who shuffled back and forth several times from the "Bread Bar" and " "Salad" Bar" (mostly non-vegetarian) on my behalf. ("you're so SKINNY sweety! Doesn't your girlfriend feed you over there in Europe?!?") (the second question she asked me when I arrived at the church for the rehearsal -- after "How's Germunee, sweetheart?" -- was "You got somebody special?" "Oh yes", I said, yes I do, Nettie", and we both smiled at each other ear-to-ear. )
