In "honor" of Columbus Day, I reflect upon my Taíno roots, from my paternal grandmother's side and one of my maternal great-grandmothers. My oldest brother sent our parents' dna for testing and it confirms Amerindian mtDNA (and other types as well, of course). That being said, mtDNA (mitochondrial dna) paints a very incomplete picture of "who we are" but is of interest because it is passed intact maternally, unlike our nuclear DNA, which is passed in recombinant form. It can be used to trace our ancestors' geographical migrations, over many centuries. It tells us what continents our ancestors came from. Many people wish for DNA information to reveal "race", as they equate continental ancestry to social constructs of so-called race.
The Spaniards did their best to fuck, enslave and kill the Taínos, the indigenous people of the Caribbean, but we're still around, bitches.
