Five Swimmers

Located in the Staines memorial gardens by the Thames, just behind the old Town Hall (now a pub), the 'Five Swimmers' by David Wynne is a very valuable sculpture that was originally the centrepiece of the Elmsleigh Centre Shopping Centre when it was opened by the Queen in 1980.

It was removed from the shopping centre and went missing for many years (allegedly it was left abandoned in a stone-yard) before finding it's new resting place here.

David Wynne was born in London in 1926, and seems to have had no formal art training. His figurative sculpture concentrates on movement, and includes most notably 'Girl With Doves' (1970), 'The Dancers' (1971) and 'Dancer with Bird' (1975), all to be found in Cadogen Square Gardens. Other works in London are 'Girl with a Dolphin' Chelsea Bridge and 'Boy with a Dolphin', the latter being at the Chelsea School of Art.

Wynne is also credited with designing the 'joined hands' on the modern 50 pence piece to represent European accord.
