1975 - Eichelberger Salzberg (Württemberg)

1975 Elchelberger Salzberg wine from Württemberg. This wine, like much wine from the region, was marketed by a winegrowers cooperative, Württembergische Weingärtnerzentralgenossenschaft (WZG, literally Württemberg wine growers central cooperative). This wine came from an area near Sulm, about 12 km (7 miles) east of Heilbronn.

 

I drank this wine on June 19. 1979 at the home of Prof. Rudolf Bräuning in Stuttgart. I had met Prof. Bräuning and his family when I was stationed with the U.S. Army in Heilbronn in 1960. I kept contact with them, and visited them several times. Prof. Bräuning was a conoisseur of Württemberg wines. As far as I know, these were the only wines which he drank. I never saw any "foreign" wines in his home.

 

This was the standard label design of the WZG cooperative. The crest is adapted from the crest of the state of Württemberg in 1919-1945. The motto "Furchtlos und Treu" (fearless and true) was the motto of the Dukes and Kings of Württemberg. I believe that the symbol at the right ("One for all and all for one") represents the cooperative movement as a whole. The symbol at the left with the snooty wine drinker ("conoisseurs drink Württemberg wine") is a long-standing advertising mark for Württemberg wine.

 

Baden-Württemberg is a Land (state) in Germany, but its component parts are separate wine regions.
