Bones and stones

There are 36 burial cairns in Sammallahdenmäki. The path to see some of these is c. 2km long.

There are two small and low cairns, one of these was investigated in 2002. A lot of burnt bone was found and many of the bones could be identified as human bones. Most of the pieces was from a scull. One complete finger bone was found. From this, a bone specialist was able to estimate that the buried person was approximately 20 years old, when he or she died. The burnt bone was also radiocarbon dated. According to the result, the burial cairn dates to the early Bronze Age, 1320-1000 BC.

The stone circles inside the cairn formed a spiral pattern. This pattern may have symbolized the sun.

You can take a map from the entrance to the path, that have the most interested cairns marked on it. But the map is not that good. It would be nice to have some signs at the cairns telling which of them you are looking at. Not all of them are recognizable.
