When The Boat Comes In
25th May 1957 and Electric Locomotive No.20003 heads the 5.15pm boat train from Newhaven Harbour to Victoria, seen approaching Purley Oaks on the then Up Slow Line.
By the 1940s the Southern Railway considered using electrical traction on more than just multiple units. Two experimental Co-Co mixed traffic electric locomotives were designed and constructed jointly between Oliver Bulleid and Alfred Raworth. These solidly built locos had a design which was similar to contemporary EMUs with a domed roof.
In 1948 British Railways constructed a third locomotive, No.20003 which looked significantly different with a slab front design with larger windows, this locomotive was also 1ft 6in longer. No.20003 was also introduced in malachite livery with yellow lining but with yellow British Railways lettering and numbering. The three locomotives had various modifications during their lives and they were closely associated with the Newhaven boat trains which they took over from the Brighton Atlantic steam locos. The first two locos were withdrawn in December 1968 and January 1969. 20003 however was the first to be withdrawn in October 1968.
