Through the Branches

This view is from the Horsehead Overlook along the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. According to a marker at the site, the bare patch on the mountain is known as a talus slope, an accumulation of broken rock fragments that have frozen, cracked, and shattered, allowing very little to grow on them. There were several bare patches visible at this location.
