Islamic Cairo
Cairo's Citadel was home to Egypt's rulers for more than 700 years. Founded in 1176 by Saladin (Salah al-Din), its mosques, museums and battlements attract large numbers of visitors. Its most prominent feature is the Mosque of Mohammed Ali, built between 1830 and 1848; its Turkish-style minarets seem somewhat out of place! This photograph was taken from Midan Salah al-Din.
