(RNMDSF) Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen - charity fund raising badge (1960’s / 1970’s)
The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen was established in 1881 by Ebenezer Joseph Mather in response to the plight of fishermen’s harsh living and working conditions. Initially called the National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, it was given the Royal Assent in 1896 thereby adding the 'Royal’ to its name. Today the charity is more generally known by its short title, The Fishermen’s Mission.
The aim of the charity is to look after the interests of fishermen and their immediate families when in-port. To this end, The Fishermen’s Mission built hostels and suitable accommodation in ports around Britain to provide clean and basic necessities for living. The charity also fights poverty amongst fishing communities as well as providing emergency and welfare support.
Since its foundation, the work of The Fishermen’s Mission has been rooted in a strong Christian ethos and the tradition continues to this day. However, people of other faiths or even no faith at all are welcome too.
