The Cobbers Club - membership badge (1960’s / 1970’s)
The Cobbers Club was founded in England by John Fahey during WW2 with the aim of bringing British and Australian people closer together in mutual understanding and friendship. While doing lecture tours, John had become aware of the lack of knowledge amongst British and Australian citizens about each other’s countries and ways of life. The club sought to rectify this and also provided a forum for Australians and British people to come together for better understanding of each other as well as encouraging the formation of friendships.
The badge depicts a boomerang along with the club’s name and motto ‘friends make friends’.
The word ‘cobber’ is Australian slang for friend or mate, but has long since fallen out of use and is no longer part of their everyday spoken language.
Can anyone throw more light on the Cobber’s Club and when it ended?
