The Three Blackamoor Heads est.1630 – pub sign, Athlone

An old hand-painted pub sign positioned above the entrance door of Sean’s Pub, Main Street, Athlone.

The Three Blackamoor Heads is the name of an older licensed premises on the same site originally owned by William Moorhead, probably between 1654 and 1690. William was a prominent townsman and merchant of Athlone who is said to have struck his own tokens coins. A number of 17th century Athlone merchants issued their own tokens (farthings) that formed part of the local currency but I was unable to find one for William Moorhead or any with a ‘bird in a tree’ symbol in the Seaby catalogue on Irish coins and tokens.
