Egyptian salesman displays high quality dates named after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah at a market in Cairo 19 September 2006, a few days before Islam's holy fasting month of Ramadan begins. Dates are named after known figures according to their quality in Egyptian markets during Ramadan. Ramadan is expected to start 23 or 24 September in a Muslim world still seething over remarks by the pope and rocked by at least five major conflicts. Ramadan is supposed to be a month of introspection and piety, but has also been in recent years a time plagued by a surge in attacks by Islamic extremists, notably in Iraq.
