U. S. Army, Joint Base San Antiono- Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Quadrangle and Former Quartermaster Depot, north side (3,173c)
The Quadrangle is the oldest structure on Fort Sam Houston. Construction on the Quadrangle started in 1876 and was completed in 1879. The Quadrangle was constructed to be a Quartermasters Supply Depot. The structure has a fort like appearance with stone wall enclosing the shops, supply and support buildings. Blacksmith and wheelwright shops were along the north wall. As those services and supplies were no longer needed, the space was not converted for other uses and most were razed. In 2012, a high wall formed the north side of the Quadrangle. Most likely because of the work activities that occurred in the area, the north wall is rough and contains few decorative or stylistics elements. Fort Sam Houston is a National Historic Landmark. The Quadrangle is on the National Register of Historic Places.
