Iowa, Decorah, Arlington House, Norwagian American Museum (Front Elevation/West Side)
The three-story Italianate style building opened as the Arlington House- a hotel- in 1877. Outstanding elements of the Italianate style on the façade of the building include wide eaves supported by large brackets, stone quoining, eyebrow window heads on the third-floor, large hood molding on the second floor, and tall first floor windows. The hotel closed five years after it opened and was then used as a dormitory for a business college. Later, it was occupied by publishing house. In the early 1930s Luther College converted the building to house its museum collection. The museum became known as the Vesterhelm Norwegian-American Museum.
The building is located in the Decorah Commercial Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property.
