The brick, two-story Colonial Revival style building is one of twelve barracks or domiciliary buildings built in 1885. The buildings were originally referred to as barracks. The buildings, with central blocks and flanking wings are fronted with wood porches and capped with hip roofs. They were patterned after military barracks built during the period, and they sat a tone for a military style existence and discipline. In 2021, the domiciliary was still housing veterans.
The Western Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The domiciliary is a contributing property. The facility is designated a National Historic Landmark District.
