Nike Missile Base DF-50 was built in 1959 in Johnson County, Texas south of the Dallas and Fort Worth metro area near Alvarado. The base was one of four air defense bases constructed during the Cold War era to defend the Dallas-Fort Worth area (DF) in the event of Soviet aircraft attacks. The Dallas-Fort Worth area was vital to United States security because of the presence of defense industries and Carswell Air Force Base, home to strategic Bomb Groups and Wings. Nike Missile Base DF-50 was decommission in 1969.
The structure was the remains of a radar support stand at the former Integrated Fire Control Site of Nike Missile Base DF-50. The fence is of more recent vintage.
