The original portion of the old hospital at Fort Sam Houston- the center section with the entrance porch- was built circa 1905. In 1910 the east and west wings with two-tier front and side porches were added. The porches allowed access from the wards. The building was further expanded with the Mexican border mobilization, and again during the period of World War I. The old hospital was closed during the 1930s, replaced by what became the Brooke Army Medical Center. The building was later used to house administrative functions associated with the base.
Fort Sam Houston is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
