Canal, Transportation- Ohio & Erie Canal Lock 38, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio
The Ohio & Erie Canal was constructed, in sections, between the 1820s and 1845. The canal ran between Lake Erie at Cleveland and Akron, through the Cuyahoga River Valley. This section of the canal was built in 1826. The lock known as Lock 38 has intact gates and is approximately thirty feet in length. The original sandstone block construction was repaired with cement prior to 1905. Around about 1830, a tavern / store was built adjacent to the lock to service canal travelers and local people. The canal was abandoned in 1913. The lock was restored in 1991. In recent years the building became the Canal Exploration Center- a visitor center where lock demonstrations are conducted seasonally on weekends. The
Lock 38 is located in the Ohio & Erie Canal Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property. The Ohio & Erie Canal Historic District is a National Historic Landmark.
