PGM-11 Redstone Missile, U. S. Army, New Mexico, Albuquerque, National Museum of Nuclear Sciences and History

The RGM-11 Redstone Rocket missile program, begun in 1951 by the U. S. Army, was designed to be mobile, capable of being launched by combat troops under battlefield conditions. The surface-to-surface, short range ballistic missile was in service during the Cold War from 1958 to 1964.

In 1961, a powerful Redstone rocket with a Mercury capsule carried Alan B. Shepard, Jr. into suborbital flight from Cape Canaveral Florida.
