Electric Extra

Metra Electric District train EX6, a Sunday extra running for the benefit of Chicago Auto Show patrons, rounds the curve south of 47th Street, Kenwood, passing by the Illinois Central-era signals that protect the crossovers formerly controlled by 50th Street Tower (said tower, out of sight to the right, is now used for equipment storage and as a relay house).

Along with a few others, this extra train followed an unusual operating pattern, serving all stops on the Blue Island Branch (which normally has no service on Sundays and very little on Saturdays) and running express from Kensington to 23rd Street-McCormick Place. I assume this was done mostly to attract riders from the southwest suburbs along the Rock Island District, who would transfer to the Electric at Blue Island.
