Boreal Owl (juvenile)
One of the more reclusive and less seen owls in the Pacific Northwest. Stumbled on this family of four birds and was ecstatic to say the least. I had the challenge of holding the flashlight in my mouth and tried to snap a shot or two before they disappeared into the dense forest. They are significant bigger birds in the head and wings than the Saw-Whets. Love their chocolate color tones. Earlier in the day, pine grosbeaks, gray crowned rosy-finches, boreal chickadees, spruce, dusky, and sooty were seen. Also, a male white tailed ptarmigan made it a 5 grouse day within a 15-17 mile stretch! I love high elevation birding.
