By end May 1999, over a two-month period, some 781,000 ethnic Albanian refugees, the majority of them children, women and the elderly, have fled the province of Kosovo in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia for neighbouring countries -- 442,400 to Albania, 249,300 to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), 67,600 to Montenegro, and 21,700 to Bosnia and Herzegovina. UNICEF's portion of the joint United Nations flash appeal for the Kosovo emergency is US$13.8 million. UNICEF emergency supplies being distributed to refugees include health kits, essential medical supplies, baby hygiene parcels, high-protein food, blankets, water purification tablets and water-testing kits. UNICEF's school-in-a-bag kits of basic classroom materials are being used to facilitate a return to schooling where possible. UNICEF is also assessing the psychosocial needs of children traumatized by their experiences and is working with other international agencies to trace unaccompanied children who were separated from their families during the exodus from Kosovo or while in transit to camps in other countries.
