Lenni Lenape Indian Display Located in the Historic Helfrich Springs Grist Mill
The historic Helfrich Springs Grist Mill, located in Whitehall, Pennsylvania, was open for tours during the two day Second Military Timeline, held 7/25-26/09, across the street fom the grist mill. Joe Wilfinger, who is part Lenni Lenape Indian and the Vice President of the Whitehall Historical Preservation Society, informed visitors about the Lenni Lenape Indians. The name means "the real people" or original people. While these Indians inhabited the eastern third of Pennsylvania, most of New Jersey and parts of New York, many left and moved westward during the colonial period. Today, some live on reservations in Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Canada. According to Joe, the Indians assumed the English name of their sacred river, the Delaware. In part, it was because of the dishonor that came from being pushed out of their original land. In the Valley of the Lehigh (River), there are the "Homeland members", descendants of those who remained behind when the others left. Many arrowheads, speartips and cutting tools of the Indians have been found in the vicinity of the mill. The display included some artifacts from other Indian tribes as Joe is also a collector of those items.
