TROPIC OF CANCER WITH SIMON REEVE - Programme Six: Laos, Vietnam, Taiwan and Hawaii.

Author and TV presenter Simon Reeve completes his epic 6-part journey around the Tropic of Cancer, the northern border of the tropics region. On this sixth leg of the journey he travels from north-west Laos across Vietnam, visits the island of Taiwan and then crosses the Pacific to finish his journey in Hawaii.

Photo shows Simon in Vietnam with Misa, a Moon Bear recently rescued from a dark cage where he had been kept for 13 years and 'milked' for his bile, which is used in traditional Asian medicine. Misa was receiving emergency treatment after his rescue at the Moon Bear Rescue Centre run by the Animals Asia Foundation in northern Vietnam.

In 2008 there were approximately 4,000 farmed bears in Vietnam. Crammed into tiny cages, the bears are repeatedly cut open so that bile can be extracted from their gall bladders, leaving agonising and infected wounds.
