Stuttering Barred Frog (Mixophyes balbus) [tadpole], Gibraltar Range, NSW.

 

I was hoping to show the full life cycle of this endangered species however the egg mass from the amplexing pair was in a crevice between two boulders which made it hard to photograph. But the tadpoles of this species are usually present all year round in varying numbers. Not content to gain an advantage laying the eggs out of the main stream body, the tadpoles of this species also develop at different rates with some spending a whole year as tadpoles to metamorph the following season.
