Postcard from New Zealand
A snow-covered Mt. Cook reflected in the glassy waters of Lake Matheson in Fox Glacier, New Zealand. This is taken from a spot known as "Reflection Island" so named for pretty obvious reasons. I rarely add frames to images anymore but this one is such a postcard I simply couldn't resist :)
Although this is the Kiwi photographic equivalent to the Buachaille Etive Mor in Scotland this is a reflection that simply has to be photographed time and again. Virtually anyone can make this image provided you get up early enough, walk to the location and are blessed with a clear, calm morning. Viewpoints are quite restricted here and there are only two or three spots from which a good reflection of Mt Cook can be made. As a result you see a lot of the same composition but man oh man is this a beautiful place.
I found that the best focal length for this site is somewhere around 45-50mm. Since I did not have lens coverage in that range I improvised using a 70-200mm in portrait format and captured 5 overlapping images that I later stitched in PTGui Pro to make a 3:2 format final image.
I'll be posting stuff from NZ on my website soon.
