Fire Ecology
Fires typically rage through the forests of central Florida. As dead vegetation accumulates, these areas become more prone to fire, partly because central Florida receives more lightning than anywhere else in North America. Fire returns nutrients to this poor soil. Some species, such as the palmettos in the foreground, are burnt to the ground and resprout from underground storage organs. Others, such as the palms in the midground, survive moderate fires with nothing more than a charred outer bark layer.
